3000 Knock at idle

3000 3 cyl diesel - I have had a "knock" at idle for a long time - if I advance the RPM to about 900-1000 it goes away.

Does anyone have any idea the cause -the tractor seems strong and no problem starting.

Should I just advance the low idle speed, leave alone??

Any suggestions

Thanks everyone for the comments - I will try the additive but am relieved to hear it is not that serious..... This 3000 is a work-horse and with loader on it, I hope it never breaks - if, when it will be a booger to fix.

If it's a high hour engine, you could have some wear at the wrist pins and bushings, some big pistons and rods in that tractor, you'll hear the noise better at low rpm's, won't cause any trouble but will sound like it's getting ready to fly apart.

You are hearing a pre-ignition knock. Don't sweat it. But..... ....sounds like you are letting it idle for a long time. That will cause it to slobber and carbon things up, like the valves and injectors. Try to keep it running at working speed, unless you have to stop for over 5 minutes, and in that case shut it down.

HELLO i have a 3000 too !! i also had a fairly noisy knock in mine but i put some howes diesel treat in it and walla its pretty much gone although i will be installing a new ford thermostat to make it run at correct temperature !
so you could have injector knock or cackle ? maybe low oil pressure at idle ? piston slap ? anyway try some diesel treat and see what happens OH !! also forgot these engine also can make noise from the timing gears !!! anyway i would let it bother you much as there noted for being a noisy diesel anyway ? large pistons !!!
