There is a nice looking 4000 gas for sale near me and I"m not sure what these are worth but maybe you guys can help me out. I need a little bigger utility tractor to replace my 8N. I"m not sure of the year but it is an earlier one, gray hood blue chassis, 4 cyl gas, SOS transmission, 3300 hours, heavy duty loader that looks to be in excellent condition. I know that the SOS on 6000"s have been known to give trouble but I"ve never seen a 4000 with one and this might worry me somewhat. Then again maybe the SOS on the 4000 is fine? The guy is asking $5900 which seems a little high to me since last year I bought a restored MM G706 Diesel for $5100. I appreciate any help. Thanks.

I recently bought a decent 4000 row crop S.O.S. diesel with less hours than that for 2555 on ebay. I would say a cherry one with good loader ought to be in the 4500 to 5000 dollar neighborhood.HTH

 S.O.S. P.S. in reply to Larry NCKS, 04-12-2005 20:24:21
The S.O.S., if well cared for and in good shape is a great transmission. I have 2 early 4000s with S.O.S. One of them is an all purpose gasoline engine model. I would not trade this transmission for any other in these tractors.

The 4000 transmission is little different than the late 6000. They both are the updated version with the DDC (direct drive clutch) rather than the troublesome ORC (over running clutch).

The pros: Independent PTO, shift on the go, faster road speed than 4 or 5 speed unless the 4 also has the sherman auxiliary, no shin bangin clutch pedal, no high priced clutch.

The cons: Poor new parts availability, few of us S.O.S. mechanics left, possible high repair cost.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the replies. I will definately try all the gears. I'll also see if I can get the price down some.

Brad

Brad-
The 4000 gas is a nice tractor especially with the loader. I bought my '62 4000 loader about 3 years ago for $5000 and ended up putting about another $1000 in repairs to get it right but it has been a real nice reliable tractor. I think you would find it to be better and stronger than your 8N in every way (8N's are good too!)

I can't speak to the issue of the SOS. Some love'em and some hate 'em. Probably you would be the best judge by driving it around, trying each gear and see how it works. If it works OK, then it's probably a good thing. Mine is a 4-speed with a Sherman over/under which is OK but this does not have live hydraulics. I'm not sure how the SOS is set up.

The price may be a little on the high side, but if the engine is good (no knocking or smoking) and the tranny and hydraulics work good then personally I don't think it is too much. It could be a great machine!
Good luck!

Wil

Hi Wil,

Thanks for the reply. I think I will try and see if I can get it a little under $5K.

Thanks for the info. That tells me a good price might be around $5000. I will see if I can drive it and check everything out thoroughly and make an offer.

Brad
