Jubilee starter problem

I just picked up an unrestored 1953 Ford Jubilee. Although it seems to run well enough, and has a number of new components (radiator & hoses), I have twice today gotten stuck when the starter failed to turn over. The solenoid clicks and the 6v battery seems fine (lights don"t even dim when trying to start at these times), but the starter doesn"t move. The first time, I removed the 3 mounting bolts and pulled the starter out as far as I could (bendix shaft and other components prevented removal) and turned the shaft a bit and reinstalled the starter. It then started right up.

What do these symptoms suggest? I imagine the bushings might be worn and the starter is in a spot where there is no electrical connection, but how do I go about checking them? Is there another way to turn the starter a bit without removing it? Is there a trick to getting the thing off the tractor? Thanks for the help, I am on a steep learning curve after having a Farmall for 12 years.

Thanks for the good comments. Sure enough, a light tap on the side of the starter allowed it to turn right over. I have a guy who did a great job rebuilding an alternator for my other tractor, so I"ll fiddle with this to see if I can work it out cleanly and take it over to him. I appreciate the help, and expect I"ll need more as I bond with this tractor.

Also go over all of the electrical connections and be sure they are clean and tight you can have what appears to be a bad starter when a cable is dirty.

Probably the brushes in starter aren't making good contact. worn or dirty.. Get it rebuilt.. Next time it does it, give the starter a " love tap" , then see if it starts.. If so it needs help.

My Jubilee's starter will come right out for me, but the first time I did remove the oil filter and petcock to get some more room. After a couple of times removing it, I know just how to turn it so that it'll come out now without removing the filter and petcock. Be sure to check the ring gear for missing teeth when you get it out, then take the sytarter to a good local alternator/starter shop. My starter guy does a real fine job for me on all my stuff, and doesn't charge much for it.

If the lights do not dim, that says that the starter isn't engaging because it pulls pretty heavily on the battery. Dirty connection or bad brushes like the other guys said.
