My 640 will not start. I have a new battery. When I turn the key, my red "charge indicator light" (according to my wiring diagram) comes on. When I press the starter switch, the light dims slightly, but there is no other reaction. Starter does not turn. I still have to check power to the starter, but I suspect the problem my be in the shift cover assembly. The gear shift swings without resistance, and I wonder if the spring in the assembly is broken. I assume this somehow fails to register as being in neutral therefor shutting down the starter. I am still able to shift into the various gears. I don't know if my problem is electrical or mechanical yet, but that stick swings like it never did before.

Is it possible to remove the entire shift cover assembly to check it out without disturbing the detent ball, spring, and shift rails? In other words can I get to this by just coming down from the top?

Any electrical system tips as well?

Thanks for any advice.

Yes, I believe you can remove the cover from the top of the tranny with no problems. I know you can on a NAA, so I assume you can on a 640. You might want to notice what gear it was in and put it back same way, etc., to avoid any complication, but it is a straightforward task to remove and replace the cover.

Well you may or may not have problems in your shift cover causing your shifter to be loose but I do not think it has anything to do with your no start problem. If the lights are going dim something is happing for it to try to start it is just not cranking.

I will assume you have a stock 3 post starter relay and your battery is good.
1) Make sure all wires are clean bright and tight.
2) Take the small wire off the relay that goes to the starter button. Ground this post to a good ground via a known good wire. If it cranks replace the wire to the starter button and or starter button.
3) If it did not crank in step 2 your starter button is NOT the problem. Remove the battery wire from the relay and touch it on the starter wire on the other side the relay. If it cranks replace the relay. If it does not crank remove your starter and bring it to a parts store or elec shop for testing.

Make sure you have the correct starter relay. This has been discussed before on this forum. The relay needs to have three terminals. The small terminal needs to go to the starter switch.
