I just got a fordson major diesel, it is in original condition, but needs a few odds and ends (runs like a top)!! What type of diesel does this have? Maybe a Perkins? Where do I find the serial number for the tractor, to find out what year it is? And where do I find the engine serial number? I would also appreciate any other useful information anyone would have to offer to help me get started restoring this tractor.

You used a dirty word in your post! Perkins!!

You may have a Perkins in an E27N Major but not if you have a Fordson Major Diesel

The diesel you have is a Ford designed direct injection unit, one of the best engines ever produced. It was used in thousands of applications all over the world. Produced in England at Dagenham. Starts before you press the starter in most conditions :).

The serial number/engine number is stamped, either behind the starter, on early versions, or under number one injector on later versions.

Try Oscars Fordson site at Link where the chaps there know all there is to know about these tractors.

Best bet is to go to the Fordson forum. On the LH side of the screen, under Communities, click on Discussion Forums, and then select Fordson.

Go to this link for the Fordson serial numbers.

If I recall correctly, the serial number is on a riveted on data plate on the firewall.

The diesel engine was a "conversion" (engineer/factory redesign) of the gas engine, from what little I've heard, they did not hold up well at all. They were built by Ford England in Dagenham and are known as Dagenham diesels.
