remove the fuel tank? no need in reply to Asbjorn, 04-27-2005 21:51:19
Hi
re-read the response, forgot to answer about the fuel tank. No need to remove it and drain it. Only your cab and all the front sheet metal.

again,
good luck and hope it works for you.
robert

Ok , i have this weekend locked for this project ( i hope ) and i hope it works out fine.
But i began to wonder about the hoses to the steering cylinders, should it be one hose and one pipe or two hoses on each cylinder.
I have one hose and one pipe, but it could be missing. In case it should be two hoses, are they the same lenght ?
Thanks !

I don't know about early models but if your 3000 is one of the later models you'll have to remove the steering column to put in the control valve and other components for the ps. There's a lot more to it than just bolting on a pump. It's a big job.

Hi,
We just converted a 861 (1962) from manual to power steering, so this is very familiar to me. There is no way to mount the column without removing the sheet metal. You probably could get by with tilting the sheet metal, but there is a high risk of bending things.Expensive mistake if you do. Once you have removed the sheet metal, You will have to remove the steering wheel. Then the dash metal can be lifted off. We never removed it completly, just set it to the side. You will need to remove the regulator and wiring harness from the old steering column. Now is a very good time to evaluate your wiring harness. This is hard on the old thing, and we lost the key switch and had to replace, and then had to replace the plastic block for the wiring. And rewire the lights.
We had a very hard time removing the front bolts on the steering arm. We found that if you take off the bottom bolt and move the arm full swing back and forth, it would break the rust and let us pull it. This was a big project, so set up lots of time for it. Once we got it back together the pump seized up, and now we have to replace it ($500 for a new one) or rebuild ($200+). lots of luck
Robert Good luck, this was kind of a hard project.
