Recently purchased a 1966 model Ford 5000 Diesel with SOS transmission. Have ordered an operators manuel but will be several weeks getting it. What wt. fluid is used in the transmission? How do you change the filter & check the oil level?

49er, your 5000 transmission is different from the 3000, its upside down for one thing. The valve body and inlet screen is at the bottom with a filter behind a 4 bolt cover on the side. Refill on oil is 11.75 qts and originally had M2C41 but now is 134 New Holland.

I just put my "65 3000 SOS back together and was told to use the Ford/New Holland 134 fluid. I got some parts for mine from a guy in Ohio and he has rebuilt many SOS's and said the Ford stuff is better than the universal type even though is meets Ford specs.

As far as the filters, there is one paper type filter that was available at the dealer, and a strainer that just needs to be cleaned. They are both accessed from the left side of the tractor. To fill with fluid, you must pull a fill plug on the right side just in front and slightly below the running board. Fill till the fluid starts running out the hole and replace the plug.

If you are unsure of anything I suggest waiting till you get the manual. It really helped me out with my problems. good luck
