Mine has a problem in R1, 5th, 6th and I believe 9th. doing the same thing. This is caused by yhe overun clutch. I usually shows up in 9th first, then R1 etc. The overun clutch will hold for a while and the turn loose. I had a hard time diagnosing the problem because for a long time 5th and 6th worked ok.

I have a 1959 971-D that kicks out of reverse (1) but also 9th when it is cold. It kicked out yesterday when it was 75 degrees. Once the tractor gets warmed up both gears are fine.

Me again. In 1971 or 72 we had our transmission rebuilt at the Ford Dealership and we had a new ORC put in at that time. It has been doing the R 1 and the 9th thing ever since. In all those years we have only put on about 1500 hours. I sure hope it doesn't start doing the 5th and 6th also.

That's an overrunning clutch going bad. I would have thought Bill's would have shown at least 9th faulty too. Maybe he doesn't use 9th much. As another poster said eventually it will show up in 5th and 6th and if it goes totally 1st and 2nd will quit as well.

Sorry, but if R1 is the only ratio affected, that does not tell me a thing. Is that the only one that has problems?

Yeps Sir. Ony R1. It is a good running SOS and very smooth. Somehow I think it could not be warmed up enough would that be the problem sir?

If the oil is cool or cold, I suppose that could make a weak overrunning clutch not engage properly.

I have a 1959 871, when it is very cold will work in R1 for about 20 or 30 feet then kick out till it warms up, then it works just fine. Only R1 seems to be affected. Must just be the nature of the beast.
