Ok, then your pto clutch may be worn out, or the springs shot. I know on a MF there is an inspection plate under the clutch that you can remove and have a look see. Don't know if the 3600 has one or not.

At any rate, to fix it is a split, but that is not that big a deal and surely easier than going into the hydraulic section.

Hi Matt,

I didn't know quite how to respond to your question, as I don't really know what's wrong with the tractor. Upon reading Marks post, it got me to thinking. The tips he gave are great for a tractor with an indepandant PTO with a wet clutch. Your 3600 would not have an indepandant PTO. At most it would have a live PTO with a 2 stage clutch. I wonder if at some point in time it actually had it's hood swapped with a 3600, and the tractor may actually be a 4000 SU, or a 4100, which look very similar to a 3600 (they share the same steering setup, but have the heavier rear end). In that case, then I would check out everything Mark suggested.
If it is a 3600 for sure, then a slipping clutch is a possibility (mabey a leaking transmission seal). I would also consider the possibility of a spline being stripped on the pressure plate, or the PTO input shaft. It may also be possible that there is a problem with the coupler at the PTO engagement lever, and the coupler is getting some traction, but not fully engaging.
I don't know what else to suggest. This may take some time hunting the problem out. Best of luck.

Rod

Do you have dry brakes with the drums & shoes at the wheel, or planetary final drives with the brake rods entering the axle housings at the planetaries? Planetary final drives = independent PTO w/wet clutch pack.

Best way of telling is whether or not you can "Independently" use your PTO regardless of what the rest of your tractor is doing.....barring the engine running of course.

A tranny PTO starts the pto spinning when the tractor starts moving.

A live PTO has a 2 stage clutch whereupon the tractor movement is controlled half way down, and the pto all the way down.

An independent is lever controlled only and once the lever is engaged, after about 1-2 seconds, the pto starts spinning.

So let's find out what you have and then you re-ask the question.

Gonna guess the 3600 and 4600 are the same with an IPTO.

There is a separate hyd pump and a set of pads and discs to execute the power transfer. The hyd pump's pressure hold the pads to the discs and allow for the transfer. Either your pressure is low, or your pads are worn out is my guess..... but your hydraulic fluid may be low. Fluid on those critters tops out above the top of the axle (at least my 4600 does). The full hole is hex socket and is behind the flow control valve on the rt side about even with the top of the axle and approx 8" forward.

HTH.
