My Ford 601 runs pretty good, but every so often it begins to miss. If i clean the plugs it runs fine again. Compression is good. Plugs are Champion RH18Y. Any suggestions?

It's had an overhaul and the fouling seems dry and sooty. Not oily.

Sure appreciate all the advice I'm getting here.

Get your manual out and adjust the carburetor. You'll need to lean it out somewhat. While you're at it make sure that your air cleaner is not clogged. Its' not uncommon for these old oil bath air cleaners to be really crudded up.

What kind of fouling do you have? Is it a dry , fluffy carbon that looks like soot? Or is it a wet, oily fouling? If it's the former, check your carburetor mixture because you may be running too rich. If it's the latter, you've lost oil control with your rings and/or valve guides are worn. Does it give off blue smoke at idle and clear up at higher powers? Then it's valve guides. hope this helps.

It looks more like soot. Not oily like when you troll too long with a 2-cycle outboard.

An RH18Y is a much hotter plug than an H10, and fouling the 18's means way too much fuel or oil in the cylinders. Engines sometimes have good compression and bad oil rings or vice versa.

Is that plug a resistor plug? ( I would not use resitor plugs or wires.. )

I'd use AL-437's ( champ H-12 ). Also.. He needs to use metal core wires.. not carbon supressor wires.

This is only a guess because we do not know if it is oil or gas fouled..... ..... But..... ....

If it is oil fouled I would guess valve guide bushings.
The valve closes tight so compression is good but when the valve opens the oil runs in the cylinder.

Sounds like to me you got an oil burner, either valve guides or rings, time for an overhaul.

Is the plug fuel fouled or oil fouled?

That plug sound/looks to me like it is way to cold for it. I think I'm running H10s in my 801 and they would/should be the same for both engines.

I used Champion D-21 in all my gas tractors Ford,Ferguson and Farmalls. and added Sta-Bil. Dont know which one did the trick but had little fouling after that.
