861 Diesel Problem

I just became the proud owner of a 1959 861 D ...cut my teeth on a 8N gas so this diesel stuff is new for me ...Most everything works OK except for one item...sometimes, when I try and move the throttle to the idle position the engine rpm will go down until I hit a certain point , Idle stop I believe ,and then rev real high .....don't know the rpm's yet cause the Proof Meter is one of the small items on the fix it list.....if I pull the throttle down and off the idle position it will settle back down and run normal.... does not happen all the time and seems to happen more often when I am trying to go to idle stop SLOWLY ....
I also noticed that the return line from the pump to the tank seems to be the original and in poor condition....kinked but I am not sure if the flow is cutoff or not...
I have read the ealier post on the return line and I am not sure if this could be part of the problem or all of my problem...
With no experience I do not know what you would see if that return line is in fact kinked to the point of no flow....
Any and all comments / suggestions appreciated...
Thanks.....diesel newbie.....Alan

My 871 will "idle up" if I miss the idle stop and get in between the idle stop and the fuel shut off position of the throttle. I can"t say that it"s not normal operation. I have no known restrictions in my fuel system. I did install an actual spin-on fuel filter set-up in place of the factory cartridge.

Maybe your experiencing this?

Fix the crimped return line... it will likely fix your problem, besides, a restricted return will make it more likely for diesel fuel to try to leak into the crankcase, and dilute your engine oil.
