Hi Guys,
I have recently bought a ford 3000 tractor. Been working fine for 3 weeks until I attached the harrow. Half way through the field the tractor just lost power and smoke was coming out of a pipe towards the bottom left side as you sit on the tractor. I managed to limp it back to the shed, but theres little power. It feels as though the brakes are on full. The throttle makes little impact on acceleration. Any ideas.

Hi Barrie,
You may have a blown head gasket. Do a compression test.

Is the tractor gas or diesel? It makes a big difference.

Hi Barrie,

As suggested above, do a compression test, and see how that is. I'm not sure wat the spec is supposed to be on that engine, but probably in the 150 PSI range. Each cylinder should be in fairly close proximity with regard to pressure. Within 10%, I think.
I would also check to make sure that there is good blue spark at the plugs, and there is good fuel flow to the carb. Check those things out and post back.

Rod

What did oil pressure do when it lost power?

Is it smoke... or water vapor out of the breather?

what's oil level/ condition?

Gosh.. no water.. oil level is low.. and no idea of oil pressue.. and ominous ;smoke' out the breather,

My guess could be anything from an overheat to a blown head gasket... I'd drain the oil and look fro water contamination.. and do a compression test... then pray a little bit..

I dont know what the oil pressure was at the time as there is no pressure gauge fitted. But after looking at it this morning, I believe it was water vapour coming from the breather. There is also an oily residue on the breather. The radiator was also empty. The oil level is half way between the full and the empty.

I have tried to start it this morning, but it wont go. It will turn over and tries to run but theres not enough to get it going. It does not sound any different when starting as it used to, as I tried to listen for rattles and strange noises, but there were none.

you might want to jack up rear and see if brakes
are dragging.
Then compression test.
Check fuel flow, carbonized plugs, coil.
