What's the story on an 801? Going to look at one tomorrow with select o speed and a 12 volt conversion. Would it make a good hay raking tractor, Are they dependable? In thing I should look for that is a warning sign? Thanks guys for the help, I'm new to ford tractors so I thought I would ask the experts. Do they have power steering?

I'm almost afraid to answer because this is a polarizing issue. I have a 901 with Select-O-Speed. I have a full hydraulic front end loader on the tractor. I think the only thing better for a loader would be a hydrostatic drive. It works great. I've used it for shredding (bush hogging) and it is great for that as well. The large number of speeds will allow you to run at lower rpm and do the job right at the right speed.

There are lots of people on this board that love these SOS tractors and an equal number that don't. Those that don't probably owned one and had a bad experience.

The only suggestion I would make is to run the tractor through all 10 speeds and both reverses. Stay in each gear a minute or so (reverse is kind of hard to stay very long - just make sure they work). Listen for any strange noises. Shifting works better at low rpm. The lurch between gears is usually worst between 4 and 5 and this is normal.

If all the gears work fine and every thing sounds good, your tractor should last a long time in light duty like raking. And these tractors are fun to drive and easy to handle.

I am an owner of 1962 801 SOS which it is obvious the others that replyed are not. Its a great tractor. I am the second owner and there has been no work done on the trans. just oil changes. It works great. Its like any thing if you take care of it. It will do fine.

Only way I'd buy one with an SOS would be if it where very cheap as in less then $1000. When the SOS is working its a good tranny but if if starts to go bad hold on to your back pocket because you can buy another tractor for less then what it would cost to fix it. My .02

Hi Anderson Farms,
You already have the warning sign. Select-O-Speed. I would stay home and not bother to look.
Except for the Select-O-Speed, the 801 series is an excellent tractor with or without power steering.
