Tractor down the road for sale. Like all of them, "It ran when it was parked," about 4 or so years ago. Except for the fenders, looks like it's all there. I'm not too keen on the high crop or the fact that it has a "select-no-speed" tranny. How fast should I run when the seller says he wants $1500 for it? Already tried offering $1500 for the trailer if he'd throw in the tractor. Almost all opinions welcome. ; ^ )

This may be one of the opinions you don't want. Don't walk away from it...run!

hvw,
The more I look at it, the more I LIKE your opinion. IF it wasn't a select-no-speed, IF it wasn't a narrow front and high-crop, IF I could be sure it will run, IF it didn't need the rear tires replaced, etc. IF any one or two of them "if's" weren't there, might be a good project.
Thanks for all opinions. It's what I needed to take a harder look at what I'd be getting into.
Russ

Its not the tractor I would want and the SOS may be a reason many wouldn't want it, but I enjoy the SOS in my ford. With the loader its real nice for control of speed and having park is also nice. If I run into problems then my view my change. The SOS in my machine works smooth, the inch peddle becomes real comfortable under your foot.

If it is really a two (2) thousand and not a four (4) thousand you should buy it because I have never seen a two (2) thousand high crop before. You may have to buy a parts tractor to make it whole, but should be able to get the tractor in running order and still have some equity in the whole project. You might want to do a little research on how many high crop two (2) thousands that were produced.

Cran,
I'll try to get some numbers off it when I catch somebody at the yard. But just for "historical reference." Stands to be more of a money pit than I want to take on when the 8N needs an engine overhaul. Good chance I'll know the buyer in this little town so I can see what a jewel I passed up.
Thanks. I'll keep trying on the research. See references to the offsets and single front wheel, but I'll keep looking.
Russ

If the tractor won't start, then you're basically buying a bucket o' parts, say $750. If they can start it up and prove that it will go through all the gears, then $1500 is a good price.

Note that a row crop will normally be worth less than an equivalent standard tractor. And an SOS will be worth much less than a five speed, even if the SOS is in perfect condition.

The only problem would be the transmission, I like the row crop style for work and it would outpull a standard 4 wheel version, wish I had a row crop 2000 with the 5 speed and LPTO

Wayde,
Haven't bought it yet. We're right next to Edwards AFB 90 miles north of Los Angeles. Are you anywhere near?

Possibly a good collector, but unless you are using it to farm with and need the tricycle gear, you probably won't want it. Indeed, I think your offer of the trailer for $1500 and the tractor gratis may not have been out of line, Just my opinion.

Thanks, Charles. It wouldn't really have a job except keeping my 2N and 8N company. The other good option I see is letting someone else buy it, give them a month or so, then offer $500 for it.
