I was using my 3000 with 730 loader yesterday and heard a loud "pop" but couldn"t figured out what the problem was....later another "pop" and then I noticed that when I turned the steering arms on both sides were catching against the bolt that goes thru the radius rod. I stopped work and examined. Both of the bolts were broken on the bottom and the axle was slightly tilted. It looked bad. After I got back to the house, I used the loader to jack up the front end and I was able to remove and replace both bolts. The bolts were not "hardened". I replaced with grade 8.

Is this a good idea??

After doing so I began to wonder if maybe them being soft was a good idea. Maybe it kept me from breaking the front-end??

When I had the front end up, I noticed that I needed a thrust bearing on one side so replaced that and the shims. The front-end seemed good and solid and the king pin looks OK.

The pin/bushing at the center of your front axle is probably shot.

When I had the tractor front-end off the ground it appeared to be tight and just looking from the side it appears OK - is their a easy way to tell??

I was afraid that might be the case but was hoping not because I have a 730 industrial loader which would be a pain to remove. I think I might be able to remove the pin with the loader on but am sure the bushing removal and installation will be a JOB.

How would you check it??

The amount of 'sag' in the axle with the radius rods disconnected will give you a good indication. Look in from behind the radiator and see if the front pump driveshaft is dragging on the top of the hollow pin.

The OEM bolt is a grade 5 bolt. However it is a special in that the fine thread lenght is not standard. It has 1" of threaded shank. The bolt is 5-1/8" lg. these are available at New Holland. Part number 86531713, about $7.00 ea.

Said it before and will say it again....the Ford front end is light and you gotta be careful with loaders on them. Get into the larger tractors and you are ok but on those small utilities, be careful.

I know, I know Mark. I thought I was bring careful..I can't tell how much I have in the bucket from the tractor seat. I will be very careful in the future. Do you think that the Grade 8 bolts are a good idea??

Yeah but like you said, they are trying to tell you something.

I don't think I would want a soft bolt in there.

My first Ford 1000 series had a FEL on it. The axle was turned upside down making the tires in at the top and out at the bottom (opposite of normal).

I thought that was odd so I started looking at the axle and it had been installed upside down.....after it had broken at the center pivot pin and was repaired (welded). They flipped the axle to put the repaired part up where the stress was least.
