The starter runs but doesn't engage the ring gear, so I pulled the starter out and the spring stayed in the tractor. I got it out but one of the plates (starter drive spring anchor) and the ring (starter drive spring lock) are MIA.

Will I need to break the tractor to retrieve these parts before running it again?

I have a new drive on order - the new kind.

I know on a 9n/2n/8n, there is 'extra room' for starter drive parts int he bell housing. It isn't uncommon to pull a starter and find a couple beat up drives in that area. I'm not sure what tractor you havve. Try a magnet on the end of coathanger wire.. etc.. if it bothers you alot..

I like your thinking..... BTDT. Lost a back bolt down the hole one cold day. Needed tractor. Well..... It made a couple snaps and cracks from being tossed around, but made it's way back into the oily sludge puddle in the bell housing. I found it there a few years later when I did the clutch. I've found lots of drive parts deep in that muck too. I wouldn't worry about it. Try with the mag, and if it doesn't retrive, then leave it lie, unless it's wedged in there and making noise. Then, by all means do a split and get it out.
