I've never used the PTO on my Jube through 45 years of ownership, but am about to embark on some serious post hole digging with a new Gearmore D40 auger. A mechanic at the shop mentioned that the older/smaller PTO shafts do break creating difficult R&R problems, so I'm about to upgrade to the 1 3/8" shaft. I've read some of the past posts on this project, as well as the manual so I think I'm ready. I'd appreciate any new or old looks at this task from the assembled readers... doin' it m'self of course!

I agree with all of the previous posters. Your original 1 1/8 PTO will likely outlast you especially since you have not used it previously. No need to change PTO shaft, nor use ORC. Just slip on the 1 1/8 - 1 3/8 sleeve if your post hole auger is so equipped and get to digging.

For those of you who do not believe, I used such a sleeve for bush hogging (heavy gound clearing) for over 10 years before the original 1 1/8 PTO shaft in my 51 8N with Sherman combo (always use underdrive when bush hogging) finally gave up. The sleeve, which I have in my tool box, was still fine. Of course, they may not make them like they did 25-30 years ago.

Thanks Gents... I'm assuming the ORC is the 1 1/8 > 1 3/8 adapter? The ones I saw at the shop looked like they might add only a small amount to the length of the drive shaft. Dean sez to use a sleeve... is that different? Bill

If you use the 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 ORC there will be no need for the sleeve. Of course you do not need the ORC for your post hole digger.

There is no good reason to use an ORC on a PHD. If you are going to use a rotary cutter or other implement with a high inertial load, get one. Installing an ORC for use with a PHD will lengthen the tractor PTO output, making the angle of the front u-joint on the auger PTO higher when that can be problematic already. Unless you need the ORC for another implement, I would put the price of an ORC towards the tractor PTO shaft upgrade.

Hi RickB,

Get a PTO bushing to fit over your 1 1/8 shaft to boost it up to 1 3/8 outside. This will not lengthen the distance any. These bushings are thin and will not hold up very well on a worn 1 1/8 PTO shaft under heavy load. Your post hole digger is a very light load, so you should not hava a problem.

I don't think I would change it if it weren't broken. My NAA still has its original 1 1/8" PTO shaft. Get yourself a 1 1/8" to 1 3/8" ORC to serve as an adapter, and then you can bush hog safely as well. If you decide to change it, drain the fluid in differential and center hydraulic section first, then four bolts and change the entire assembly with seals and bushings for about $100.
