Compression Noise

69 3000 diesel - Just yesterday after shredding most of the day, I noticed at idle their is a "compression noise" coming from around #1 cylinder. At first I thought that might be a exhaust manifold gasket beginning to leak - but I think I could feel the blow-by with my hand??? I pulled the valve cover off, thinking that maybe it was a valve - the clearances seemed OK. A neighbor said he thought that it might be on the intake side....he suggested taking some starter fluid and spray around the intake and I would be able to tell if it was leaking. I tried - nothing.

The engine doesn"t seem to be missing and no loss of power. When I rev it up you cannot hear the noise but when you kill you can clearly hear the compression noise as it quits.

Does anyone have a clue what this might be??

How about blowing a metal gasket where your injector mounts into the head.

Would take just a minute to just replace them then bleed your lines at the injector and fire her up. Cost is a few cents.

You should have the fuel return line on your tractor in plastic so when you are at the NH dealer to get your injector mounting metal seals you might as well get some plastic tubing to hook your return line back up.

Unlike metal of the past, plastic only works for one installation and you will have to break it to get your injectors out.

HTH,

Mark

Thanks Mark for the suggestion - I'll go to the dealer and give it a try. Would you replace all or just the one suspected??

I'll get some of the tubing....btw, some of my return lines have a clamp and others just push on - which is best or does it matter??

All. Mine are OEM and are just pushed on. The pressure is very low as the end of the tube going back into the tank is open. I'd say the pressure is only a couple of psi so a clamp is unnecessary. If you would feel better use a nylon tie wrap.

If the plastic line is not broke then it will not need replacing. You remove the bolt that holds the line to the injector and move it aside and then remove the injector. Install the new seals and the injector and attach the line to it. You might need only to tighten the two bolts holding the injector in the head to stop the leaking compression.
