I am looking at a 1969 Ford 5000 tractor. Its diesel (converted from gas), 70hp, loader, was overhauled 1500 hours ago. I"m not familiar with these tractors. Are they reliable? Does a diesel start good in southern Minnesota? Any advice you can give me would be appreciated.

Ditto in the injection pump advice... check lube.

Also.. If ti were me.. i'd want a gear model.. not an SOS model..

I'm also looking to buy a 5000 as soon as I can find a good one.

I have a spec sheet on the 5000 saved on my computer.. about 300k worth of pdf files. Email me if you want a copy.

I know that this is a response to an old post...but I would really appreciate the pdf files you have on the Ford 5000 tractor. My dad has one that he farmed with for over 20 years. He has alzheimers disease now and I will be assuming care of the farm which includes tractor maintenance...problem is, I can't find his manual on his tractor. I really need to know how to service and maintain this "always reliable beloved tractor" of his. Any and all info you or anyone else could provide me with would be greatly appreciated. Laura

Check the lube in the injector pump, if it has not been changed it will be dry or full of diesel.

The early models were puny in power, make sure it was not repowered with an early engine. The pto brake is needed to stop the pto when it is disengaged, check to make the pto does not turn when cold. The coolant needs a special additive to prevent cavitation and pin holes into the oil side.

The lucas generator is well, lucas. There are aftermaket alternators.

Differental lock, power steer, and dual power are nice. Ours did not have the last two.

The 5000 is generally regarded as one of the best tractors that Ford built. I owned one for several years and was very well pleased with it. You can see if it is equipt with the thermostart option, this is a glow plug that is screwed into the intake manifold to assist in cold weather starting. If it is not they can be added to help with cold weather starting.
