How long should 3-point stay up when engine stops

I have a 1967 UK Pre-force Ford 3000. When I stop the engine with the 3-point fully raised it slowly lets itself down, taking about 5 minutes to lower all the way. Is this normal, or should I be checking for worn hydraulic seals etc ?

No, this is not normal. You probably need to reseal the lift cylinder. It could also be related to a bad lift cylinder safety valve, or an improperly adjusted control valve. Time to pull the access cover on the left side, and look in and see if you can tell where the oil is coming from. Then pull the lift cover and repair. HTH.

Rod - thanks. This problem is definitely worse since I changed the oil in the back-end from whatever was in when I bought it to a 'universal tractor oil' of 20W-30. Is it possible I should have used something more viscous instead, or that it might need some air bleeding out ?

Bob,

There could have been a heavier oil in there that was covering up some of the problem, but Universal Tractor Fluid, which has a weight of 10W30 is the specified oil for the hydraulics of your 3000. It should hold the hitch up a good deal longer than you described. A few hours at least, if not for days. The most common problem relating to fast sinking lift arms is a torn seal on the lift cylinder piston. It's not really a big job to change, except that the lift cover is heavy to lift off.
I doubt that the problem is oil related. HTH.

OK Rod, thanks again. I'll have to dig-out the workshop manual and toolkit next - watch this space...
