Our family hauler is getting old and quickly becoming a money pit. I have always been a Ford guy, but asked our local mechanic his opinion about used Taurus years 2001-2004 and he said the engines just don't hold up. I have not heard this anywhere else, so I am turning to you good folks on this board for your input. Any 2001-2004 Taurus owners out there with input for me? Thanks, and sorry for the long off topic.

I"d stay away from these also, not much realibility ar credibility either. The first one here was an 1988, daughters, #2 was a 1989, wife"s, #3 was a 1991, then a 1994, next a 1995, then a 1996, a 2000, and a 2003, and soon a 2005. Had to get rid every one way too soon because we became afraid of driving them too far from home. Oh yah, the 1988 is the only one not on the road anymore. OH, I almost forgot, everyone of them left here at 250,000+ miles. Changed 6 sets of brakes, 1 muffler, and 2 front struts in all those years and on ALL of those cars, none used any oil between changes(3000miles). Never a transmission problem. Maybe we"ve been lucky but we"re pretty satisfied, Dale

Thanks Dale, that's a pretty good track record.

The knock I've always heard against the Taurus is the transmission. I manage a small credit union. One day a member with a Taurus loan filed bankruptcy and said I could have the Taurus. When I asked where it was so I could go pick it up he said it was at the tranny shop. I called them and they said the tranny was toast.

The car looked really good so I thought I'd try to find a good used tranny to put in it and then sell it for a better price. I called 3 junkyards and they all laughed at me. One of them didn't even hear what I was looking for, but when she heard me say "Taurus" she said "let me guess, you need a transmission". She went on to say she had 23 Tauruses...all with good engines but not a good tranny in the bunch.

This was in the late 90's so maybe the 2001-2004 versions are better. I have a neighbor with a '99 Taurus and he has had to rebuild it, too.

Thanks for the feedback. On a car survey website (www.carsurvey.org), some folks mention strut problems with the 2001-2004.

641er,
Consumer Reports likes them. Not thrilled with the brakes, electrical amd "body integrity," but indicate the newer (2003 and 2004) are better. FWIW

Thanks for the feedback, word of mouth is the best advertising.
