WHERE IS THE SERIAL # ON A SUPPOSEDLY 4000 FORD. WE SEE LOTS OF #'S BUT THEY APPEAR TO BE CASTING #'S. THIS TRACTOR IS EARLY 60'S WE THINK. MY FRIEND DOES NOT THINK IT IS A 4000. IT HAS BEEN REPAINTED. HELP PLEASE. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

As Tom says, it should be stamped into the top right (as viewed from the driver's seat) of the bell housing, a few inches (toward the rear of the tractor) from the starter on the '65 and later Fords. On '64 and earlier, the starter and numbers are in the same relative position on the left side.

Look on the flat of the bell housing, on the right side, just to the rear of the starter. That's the great advice I got from the poeple here who helped me ID my 4000.
Tom
