I noe see why many people don't think the NAPA IC14SB 12v coil is a real 12v coil ( no resistor needed ). It's because the online pic they show of it says 'with external resistor'. Not sure where they got that pic.. but that is not the coil that is in the box they sell. Here are 2 comparison pics.

Here is the napa pic as displayed on their website:

I did not know that any 12 volt coils needed resistors. I just asked the guy at Autozone for the coil to fit a 1972 Chevy Impala with a 350 ci engine. I put it on my Ferguson TO20 and have not had any problems. What should I have looked for, it appears I just got lucky. The coil cost about 12.00 dollars. With the old six volt coil I kept burning point, no problems since putting the twelve volt on the tractor.

Sounds like you got lucky and got the right coil ( correct primary resistance). As you found out.. true 12v coils don't need any external resistance.

Too many people sell a coil that is marked "12V" and then in little lettering it will say 'with external resistance'. In effect.. they are selling a 6v coil.. that can be used on 12v if you add a dropping resistor... IMHO.. that's a horrible way to do business.

And yes.. with your old coil.. your primary ignition resistance must have been too low, leading to reduced points life.

I just bought one from the biggest NAPA in the area - the person behind the counter just gave me a blank stare when I said I wanted a non-resistor 12 volt coil and handed me the paper catalog to browse through. They did not have the first 2 non-resistor coils I found in the catalog in stock but they did end up having an IC14 on the shelf. At $50 I said OUCH a couple of times. Could have gotten a GP Sorenson (GC124?) from Advance Auto for $25 but the NAPA coils are made by Standard and you get what you pay for in electrical stuff.

After frying another $14 ballast resistor and taking out the coil this time I figure one less point of failure and a good coil is worth the extra hole in the pocket.

Here's a hint... NAPA IC14 next time ask for an IC14SB price drops to 14.99 and it is a napa gold coil.

So far, I have not had a napa ic14sb coil fail on my tractors using them.

They also have spade terminals mounted right on the screw terminals. i like that. Way easier to disconnect then when you need to.. just yank the spade connector off.

Yep parts stores now day are getting real bad. Every time I buy a starter or alternator I have it tested on the bench before I walk out. About 50% of them don't work which is bad when you need the part yesterday and you do all the work to pull the part and put it back on and its still bad.

Ok.. Now here is the coil you really get.

For those of you with bad eyes.. the text is:
" 12v No external resistor required "

Maybee if they actually got the right pic for the right product... they might sell more.. ya think?
