Why did Ford test the 6000 in March of 1961 at 2400 rpm. Another test was done in June of 1963 at 2230 rpm. The final test was done in March of 1965 at 2430 rpm. Does anyone know why ford kept changing the rpm and hence the horsepower of this tractor? Just curious if anyone knew the reason.

Test 783 : 6000-Diesel
Engine rated at 2400 rpm
540 pto @ 2227 crankshaft rpm
Test 784 : 6000-gas
Engine rated at 2400 rpm
1000 pto @ 2227 crankshaft rpm

Test 842 : 6000-gas
Engine rated at 2300 rpm
540 pto @ 2227 crankshaft rpm
Test 843 : 6000-Diesel
Engine rated at 2230 rpm
1000 pto @ 1731 crankshaft rpm

Test 877 : Commander 6000-gas
Engine rated at 2430 rpm
1000 pto @ 2227 crankshaft rpm
1000 pto @ 1731 crankshaft rpm
Test 878 : Commander 6000-Diesel
Engine rated at 2430 rpm
1000 pto @ 2228 crankshaft rpm

They finally rated the engine @ 2430 rpm or exactly 200 rpm above the engine rpm required to obtain 540 or 1000 rpm in normal operation mode!!! It looks like the 2000/2200rpm for other models. Is there any logic for this choice ? not sure. Rlach

I sure don't know but only could surmise that they were looking to max something such as HP, fuel economy etc but gas and diesels would have differing power curves so while one test may help a diesel it may be detrimental to a gas. I would be interested to know the outcome.

Those RPM's sound like one they were going between a manual transmission and an SOS transmission. Don't know if it relates perfectly or not, but the engines in the 4 cyl 4000 series were rated at 2200 rpm for 4 speed and 2400 rpm for SOS. Could that be part of the issue?

Did they make a 6000 with a standard tranny?

I think all 6000's were SOS transmission.
