I have a 681 and a 4000 SU. The pto shaft on the 681 extends 2 3/4" beyond the housing with the threads for the shaft cover. On the 4000, the shaft extends 3 5/8" beyond the housing. I do not have a shaft cover for the 4000. The cover from the 681 does not fit; hits the shaft before the threads engage. My question: Is this normal? Do they make a longer pto shaft cover for the larger tractor? If so, anyone out there got one they will part with? Thanks for the help, Bill

Is there a solution for a 641 with an overrunning clutch on the PTO shaft? I imagine that could be even more dangerous than the exposed shaft w/o the clutch?!

Hey Don, I have never used an ORC (my tractors both have independant pto) but always assumed that the ORC fastened to the pto shaft with the same type of quick connect as the drive shaft and therefore could be easily removed whenever the driveshaft was removed. If I have that all wrong, please let me know. Bill

ORC are available with good quick releases. Mine lives on the bush hog shaft so that I can leave my pto cover on the tractor the rest of the time.

Hi Bill,
My ORC has a pin which is driven through the PTO hole which makes it a permanent installation. If it had a quick disconnect that would work fine. Maybe some do have that feature although I purchased mine from a NH dealer. Thanks, Don

Bill; I just used a piece of pipe, that was already threaded, cut the length I wanted, welded the end shut, painted, looked like a new one with no money spent. This was for a 2000. About a 20 minute job. I am sure they are all standard threads, important to have on, Safety-----Van

Had that problem once with a Fergason TO20 that had the 1 1/8 PTO shaft swaped to a 1 3/8 shaft. Cut a standard cover and welded in an extenshion between the two halfs. Any good shop could do this for ya if all else fails

In addition to what Bill said, the pto cover is important for safety reasons. If the pto were to be "accidentally" left engaged and someone got a loose sleeve or pant leg too close, you'd soon have someone missing a limb.

Well Ed, I think it is important. I'll just bet that the pto shaft oil seal will last a lot longer if the area is kept reasonably clean. Example; I was out most of yesterday afternoon working with a box blade in dusty gravel condition. By the time I was done the pto shaft was covered with gritty dirt. I washed the tractor down but fiqure I likely forced some of the grit into the seal. Also, if the top link is droped it will smack the pto shaft; enough of that and you'll start having trouble getting the coupler on the shaft. I really want to cover it when not in use. I hope someone will tell me that they make a longer cover for this tractor. If not I will have to make one.

My 4000SU came with one that appers to be a factory unit. It is longer than the one that goes over a 9N and still has the square part on the end for a wrench.
