3000 hydraulic pump prime and test questions

Working on my father in laws 3000 with a piston pump. It lost prime, and is not interested in re-priming itself.

I've removed the allen head plug, and the high pressure line. Then with my fingers over the holes, I can feel the pump build up just a little pressure with air (2psi?). Should I be able to feel a more positive air pressure with the pump trying to prime itself.

I went to pull the pump so that I could check the fluid uptake to it, but that line proved to be a bugger about coming off. If it was my tractor, I'd simple have cussed it off, but it's not. So I thought I'd ask also if this line is going to be that much trouble to put back into the pump once I've got it yanked out.

Here's to hoping that I don't have to open the tractor up to clean the intake filter. That reads like quite a bit of work.

Hey Nolan! How's it going? I've wondered about you and especially your "new" tractor driver. What's the "status" on your very tired 8N?

Hope you don't have to take the hydraulic lines off. I bought a 2110 LCG that had had the high presure line crimped/cracked. Someone "repaired" it with two hose clamps and a piece of hose. I blew that repair trying to lift my Super Pan with a heavy load, something my 3000 would have handled OK. It is a MAJOR pain to take the lines off. Got to remove the running board and the steering arm off the steering column. That took a HEAVY duty puller that I was afraid, for a while, would not even do it. Think I let it set over the week under load. Ugly!!

When I first got my 3000, I was having hydraulic problems, sometimes called hickups. So I pulled the lift cover by my self, I'm a little guy, 5'8" 150#, and it was just all I could lift. So while the cover was off I fixed stuff. Shaft for left brake that goes thru the housing was badly worn. I also replaced the filter. Yea, it's one of those, if your can't "hold your mouth just right" it will not come out or go in. STUPID, STUPID design!!!!

Wish I could give you an answer on the pump priming, but I have not got the replacement (from parts yard) hydraulic lines back on the 2110. Got a few other things that I found that need fixing, such as the brake pedals are locked together because the grease has gotten solid - at least I hope that that is the case. And not that the shaft and pedal have rusted together.

Miss your "stories" on the N-Board. You have a good way with words - I'm sort of jelious. :-)

Regards,
Larry

Well, my little tractor driver is doing just fine. Growing like a weed. Sweet kid. Smiles all the time and loves people. Couldn't do any better, but them I'm probably biased in my opinion of him. :-)

The ol' 8N is running again. Some threats, a tantrum or two, and a few other magical elixors (gasoline being one of them)...and it putts along again. Yep, I ran it out of gas parking it. So embarassing! And it's not the first time I've done this to myself with this tractor.

The sloped floor of the shed has gotten me several times. Pull in and park on it just fine, but with about 1/8 tank of fuel, it's enough slope to cause the fuel to drain away from the petcock, and leave me unable to start.

So the mighty (feeble) 8N still needs a rebuild, but it isn't going to be getting it any time soon. Between lack of funds and time, and the fact that it runs, rebuilding that engine is a back burner project, perhaps for the next owner.

Think I might have the 3000 licked now. I thought they had a shared oil supply for the transmission and rear end, apparently they don't. So my noticing that the transmission was full would have no bearing on the hydraulics. The tractor has a leaky pto shaft, and sat for several months on a hill where Craig got it stuck with the rear end down. I think I know what to do now. It's probably just drained itself out the pto seal and is out of oil. Reading through the archives about various hydraulic maladies has helped to.

Well, it's been good chatting with you. Take care of yourself. And until next time...
