601 Workmaster problem

I have just recently aquired a 601 workmaster and have for reletivly cheap due to the fact that it doesn't run. Previous owner said that he was going along with the brush hog on the back and heard the motor backfire and miss then quit. I bought it with the knowledge that more than likely I would be rebuilding the motor. Si I run compression checks and find 30, 60, 40, and 30 respectivly in the cyklinders. This confirms my thought that the engine needs overhauling. I take the head off and find that all four pistons are soundly in the cylinders. And the cylinders are not egged at all. I haven't taken a straight edge to the head yet but the head gasket is in good shape with no burning. So is it possible to warp the head enough to lose compression but not trash the head gasket? I have a sneaking suspicion that I may still overhaul the tractor yet but would like to fix it quick to use it before the snow flies. Any help?

As good as you say the cylinders are, you might not want to mess with the bottom end ('if it ain't broke, don't fix it?'). One thing I've seen with these is the distributor jump time! Distributor was driven by a sleeve and shaft that was just SWEATED together and eventually slipped! Apparently wasn't machined well enough to grip tight enouch. I drilled a cross hole through the sleeve/shaft ass'y and installed a roll pin.

Did you do a wet compression test also?

This is the only way I know of to confirm if you you need to go into the lower half.

Valves were working fine, I really don't think it is the camshaft

For the cost of a stick with a rubber suction cup
ypu might lap the valves and try the test
again.
Also you DID have the engine warm, choke off,
throttle open, 12 volt jump to starter, dry
then wet with oil, plugs out, after 5 turns.

recently i worked on a 800 that the camshaft and the gear that drives the hydraulic pump were broken.something caused thehyd.pump to stop, which in turn broke the gear and the shaft.apparently the happens often on these tractors.
