I have a 1963 Ford 2000 Gas. Last week when I tried using it after sitting in a garage for about a month, the 3 pt hitch will not lift (It worked perfect when I parked it). All I use this tractor for mowing using a 5ft Brush Hog. The auxillary hydraulic valve (mounted on top of the main valve housing under the seat) does load the motor down if closed, so I don't believe it's the pump or that it has lost it's prime. Could something be stuck somewhere? Has anyone had this happen to them? How hard is the main hydraulic valve housing assembly to remove? Repair? Can you do it successfully without all the special tools the Ford Service manual says you require? Any Tips, I do have the service manual and I am a fairly decient mechanic.

Also, can standard hydraulic oil be used? Even though the tractor only has 1500 hrs on it, I'm guessing it has never been changed? Maybe this is why something stuck? Thanks for any help, Dave dave.e.sobczak@jci.com

dave, I just finished re-building my lift cover on my 640, and like you I have a service manual and am a decient mechanic. it was fairly a fairly simple job. i ordered a "lift cover repair kit" from FNH before i ever started it has all the o-rings and gaskets. I do not have all the "special" tools ford says you need i made my adjustments with a set of digital calipers. I do recomend rebuilding somewhere with a parts washer and a press available. my lift shaft that connects to the lift arms was a bear to get out once i cleaned it up real good it went back together fine(thus the reason for the press if needed)removing the check valve was the hardest part. e-mail jwhjmh@aol.com if you have any questions that i might be able to help with.

Dave, Glad you've pulled a wrench. Don't shy away from pulling the top cover it's a breeze. A word of caution..... .. their awakward to handle so use a hoist or lift especally when ya put it back. Becareful also not to lose the o rings under the remote and the two under the cover for the pressure and return. Could be when ya get in their you'll find a broked or disconected linkage. If you really don't think the oil has ever been changed you may want to start there but it sounds like a stuck valve if you have pressure at the remote valve. The three point has priority pryor too the remote valve. As far as fluid I use New Holland 134 in every thing but the crank case. Yes every thing so buy the 2 1/2 gallon jug. The adjustment tools you mention probably would't help your case as ya wen't from working to not. Good Luck..... AB

AB...
When you say you use that New Holland 134 hydraulic fluid "in everything", I take that to mean steering gear box, top off the transmission fluid level, etc. Did I read that right?
(How 'bout where the manual says to use 80 or 90 weight gear oil...is 134 good for there too?)
Thanks for the tip!

JR - Yes indeed 134 Hydrolic oil is 80 - 90 weight oil. Use it in your power stearing , transmission, rear end the works! except the crankcase it is not motor oil! Anybody else out there that hadn't heard of this yet check it out with your NH Dealer that's who got me started.

Thanks for the tips AB, I'll be diving into the tractor hydraulic problem this weekend. I'll have to get to a New Holland dealer and pick up the oil. I'll let you know how it all turns out. Dave
