My father in law gave me this tractor, however it is not running. It does have a front end lift and looks pretty good.
Here are my problems to date:
1. For the last four or five years he ran it with the battery hooked up backwards(+) ground. He said his last tractor (8N) was that way. I know it is a (-) ground but wonder if this has caused the other problems.
2. No fuel at carb blew out line got fuel except discovered he has bypassed fuel pump He does not remember why.
3. This caused me to discover that carb leaks gas.
4. I replaced points and all parts of dist. Can not see spark and I am not sure of elec hook up to coil as it looks like the main voltage line goes to a "resitor" looking bar then up to(+)side of coil?? then another wire (-) post of coil to dist.??? Can get no spark to ground from high voltage line of coil. The manual says to check polarity but eng must be running to do so. I am thinking of starting with a new regulator and to perhaps polarize the system again?
Thks for any help
Beau

If the tractor was used for several years the way it is configured now then you can assume that it is correct and that a component has failed. You did not mention replaceing the condenser and a bad condenser will cause no spark.

Sounds like that is the 4cyl gas version.. and I'm not sure.. but it -may- have been 6v pos grnd from the factory.. that would / could be why he has a 6v coil , and dropping resistor in line with it.

To do a quick test.. run power to the resistor.. then from resistor to the primary on the 6v coil.. then from the other side of the coil to the distribuitor passthru..(points).

Check for shorts at the passthru, and shorted capacitor.

Verify it is a 6v coil, and not a 12v coil.

Also.. if this has an alternator on it now.. it will most likely need to be neg grnd.. if it isn't.. alt may be cooked.

Match coil polarity to ground polarity. if neg is grnd.. put coil(-) to points.. if pos is grnd.. put coil (+) to points.

Thank you soundguy for the post. This is a 1972 3000 3cyl gasoline tractor with a 12 volt system.
My father in law had turned the battery around some years back and he says it ran fine that way!
The tractor has been in a shed not moved for five years that I know of.
I think the fuel pump still works but for some reason my father in law has it by passed. The carb which I just purchased rebuilt leaks fuel out of the bottom drain plug.
My father in law had tried to reset the points a few years back left wires loose and and broke the rotor and cap. I purchased new cap, plugs, rotor, points, condinsor, etc. and a new 12 volt coil.
I also have a new voltage regulator and I'm thinking I could replace the old one and then polarize the new one and start rewiring some systems over. It has a 12 volt generator(orginal) looks like.I'm worried that the battery may have changed the polarity and following the manual might be backward.

Had it been an alternator.. and a dead battery.. I think it is possible that it changed polarities. Gennies, for the most part.. either simply don't charge.. or some, for some 'magic' reason.. start charging correctly on the new polarity..

I'd go with no resistors.. new coil.. known good battery, and good vr. test the genny without a VR by full fielding it after polarizing.
