I have a 600 Ford that has been running well but now give NO Spark from the coil. It had been idle for a while when this came up.

Here are symptoms: No spark (can hold in hand!) from coil AND the external resitor gets very hot when key is on.

I followed all troubleshooting offered by John T, old and others (thanks to all!) but no good.

More facts and symptoms: 12 v. coil with external resistor,
5.8 v. at the coil's + terminal (top side, away from distrib),
COMPLETEly checked points, condenser, all seems ok,
new points, condenser, coil, resistor, coil wire,
1.3 Ohm across resister,
1.4 Ohm across + and - of coil,
points set at 0.024,
good ground wire and connections from the - of coil,

So, out of ideas and still no coil spark and the Resister is HOT!

I much appreciate any help, insight and ideas anyone can share.

Gotta mow while it's dry! Best to all.
Alan

Here's a little trick you might try. Using a test light, attach the clip to a good ground and place the probe on the distributor side of the coil or the post on the distributor. Crank the engine over and watch the test light. If all is well in the primary side of the system the light will flash as the engine cranks (light on when points are open, light off when points close)

If the test light stays on continuosly, the points aren't making good enough contact to ground the circuit, or you have an "open" in the circuit in the distributor (bad points, broken connector link...)

If the test light doesn't come on at all, you're not getting current through the coil, or the circuit is just plain grounded inside the distributor (such as points shorted to ground..)

Hope this may help...

Thanks for sharing this tip. Makes perfect sense. Now if I can just remember it when I need it.

Be sure and check the two screws that hold the points mounting plate in the distributor. If they are loose or corroded you will not have any spark. That plate needs to be properly grounded. Good luck

A real 12v coil doesn't need a resistor. if it says "12v with external resistance" you simply have a 6v coil..

Still.. I'd replace/clean/file the points and check again.. if the resistor is getting hot.. current is flowing. If you are getting voltage to the coil primary.. then there are no shorts befor ehte coil. Check distrib feedthru wire/insulator.. they get brittle and crack, and short out.

Do you get any spark at the points if you open them with your hand/screw driver?? If you do then maybe and this is a sort of wild guess but you may have a bad rotor/cap. Either one can short the system out and then you would not get spark.

Old, thanks for the tip.

I remember that I had no spark at all when I opened the points with screwdriver. However, I'll check again tomorrow.

Many thanks,

Well if you have no spark at the points that means either they are grounded some place, or your coil is bad. Or also the points could be corroded.

Had the same problem and found the screw terminal into the distributor was grounded. Need to insulate accordingly.

I Got it! The wire from the secondary side of coil was grounding itself! It was very slightly cracked- enough, I suppose, to find a ground on the distributor housing.

Thanks to the discussion on this board I was pointed in the right direction. Man, I have learned a lot. Many thanks to all who responded.

Now, I'm off to mow.

Alan
