A week or so ago I was given this tractor from my father in law. It was not running and I noticed the battery was hooked up with a + grn. I corrected that and install new points, rotor, moisture shield, condinsor, dist cap, wires and a new coil and could not get a spark, so in desperation I turned the battery around(+) to Grn. and it all works??? Anybody know why..

This is all greek to me. I say that cause I have two owners manuals covering 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, that came with my tracter when it was purchased new in 1975 indicates negative ground, The IT manual for this series tractor seems also to indicate a - ground

If I had to guess with out looking I would say your tractor runs with + ground only because the coil is hooked up for + ground.

The wire from the coil to the distribtor has to be hooked up the same way as teh battery.
+ ground + side of the coil
- ground - side of the coil.

All early Fords were designed with a positive ground system. You did not say what year your tractor is or whether it is a 4 cylinder or three cylinder but all 4 cylinder 3000s were positive ground and, maybe, all 3 cylinder 3000s as well. Many of these early tractors with 6V systems have been converted to 12V systems and most (all?) of these conversions are negative ground.

As to the battery: It is not possible for the polarity of the battery to have been reversed by incorrect connection.

Your comments re reversed battery polarity reminded me we used to come across occassional new batteries charged the wrong way round (neg =+ve & +ve = neg). Guess with a flat battery it could be possible to charge it either way.

How many 4 cylinder 3000's have you ever seen? There are no 4cyl 3000's, and there are no positive ground 3000's except those that have had the polarity switched for some obscure reason.

I stand corrected. Only 2000s and 4000s with 4 cylinder engines.

If it was run for a period of time hooked backwards it could have reversed the polarity of the battery. Check your battery with a volt meter and you can varify the polarity by which way you need the leeds hooked to get a positive voltage reading.

I put the carb back on it and hook up the gas and it started right up. Ran around for about a hour runs great. I guess I can live with the battery hooked up backwards.

I still recomend checking to see if the polarity has been reversed in the battery for future reference on jump starting or charging it with a battery charger.
