Greetings Ford experts,

Ad reads - "800 Ford, GOOD TIRES, needs motor work. $2500/OBO"

I have not seen it yet, but I called, apparently needs engine rebuild, sounds like a 5 speed tranny, described as in good condition overall except for engine situation. I know, not much to go on, but I would like some opinions on value with the minimal info I have given. Thanks.

The best way to find out how bad it is , is to go check it out yourself . Maybe the guy has overfilled the crancase . 6 years ago I paid 3,000.00 plus my 9n for a 640 & thought I got a good deal . Later found out I got a good screwing . I wish now that I would've bought it outrite instead( aftersite ). At least the guys open with you & says best offer . That tractor would sell for around 4,000.00 around these parts . Go for it ; I would . Ken

I bought a good running 860 a year ago for $3800. It has 5sp, live pto, very good tires and great tin. I had to put a new exhaust manifold and fan belt pulley on it and change the fluids. I agree that $2500 sounds a bit high if it needs a rebuild. A great tractor tho.

Not all 5 speeds had live pto...860 has a live pto, 850 does not. IF everything but the engine is in good shape $1500 (maybe $2000 if it has some extras like power steering or implements) sounds reasonable.

Brad, the 5 speed transmission is a plus. I think with the 5 speed it has live PTO but others with better knowledge can correct me if I'm wrong. Even with the 5 speed and live pto the price seems a little high.

An x6x model tractor has 5 speed with live pto.

An x5x model has 5 speed without live pto.

I'd guess $1500 tops if the engine is very bad. To fix/rebuild your looking at $1500-2000 depending on what all it might need.

Thanks to all for your input. I tried to go look at the tractor Sunday afternoon but he was busy or something, said to call back later in the week. I've seen one 800 "parts tractor" sell at auction awhile back. It was quite rough, I think a 4 speed/Gas and was mostly intact. I think it sold for $1100 or 1200. I think I've heard that a complete 5 speed set-up to convert an SOS can go for around $1200 by itself. So, I guess 1500-2000 would be reasonable. We'll see what develops. Later.

Just to give you an idae of worth for non running tractors I have 4 or 5 right now that I picked up here and there. The highest I payed for any one was $650 and the lowest was $200. At this time all of them run well but took 10-40 hours of work and a few $$ to get them that way.
