On my 1956 850 series Ford..the exhaust simply shoots out to the side under the gas tank. Is this ok, or should it exhaust straight up or under the tractor? I have seen both on others tractors but none shooting out the side. Thanks..

The original one and the one from NH will bolt to the block with two bolts. This holds the exhaust in the vertical position. I do not like to attach a strap to the hood. One tree limb and you have holes torn in your hood and dents to fix. You can also buy an adapter that fits in a similar way and install the exhaust down and out under the rear axle. There are a lot of the new tractors that have the exhaust coming out the side the same as yours. I think that it would work alright that way. It would keep your foot cooler and you should stay cooler when comparing it to the under the axle setup. When compared to the vertical exhaust, you would not have anything to catch on a tree limb or something similar.

My 960 had a homemade vertical exhaust on it when I got it , but it was bolted to the side of the hood and did not leave room for the headlight.
When i preped it for painting I had to fill up the holes so I had a muffler shop make a new one.
It has to be very short from muffler to the first bend, then it needs to be offset 5 1/2" to the side. The clamp on the muffler bolts to a T bracket on the side of the gas tank bracket, also I welded a small angle on the pipe and bolted a strap to it with the other end going to the top front of the gas tank bracket. This works great, the pipe cost $30. FNH has a vertical exhaust adaptor that is $42 without the pipe. With my pipe I was able to put the headlight back on.
Good Luck

You're right. It should be either straight up or down and out the back. It sounds like yours used to be a vertical exhaust but the last 90 degree bend up and the vertical stack are missing.

It should be an easy fix. Any decent muffler shop should be able to bend you a piece of pipe to fit. Don't forget a raincap! You also may need to do something to stabilize the vertical section so it doesn't rattle itself apart. Some attach a strap to the side of the hood.

My muffler is pointing straight up next to the hood. It appears that someone has modified it to do this tho. The manifold points up then there is a 90deg bend forward then another 90deg to the left and then another 90deg up. These are all attached to each other. It looks good but I find it hard to believe that's the way it came new. The last two are welded together.
