I'm trying to time this engine. Using #1 lead with timing lite I can not see a mark on flywheel. Turned dist all the way toward back of tractor(clockwise) and it runs smoother quits backfiring sounds like its hitting on all three but still no mark on flywheel. Could it be possible that dist is off one gear as I think if I could turn it a little more toward back of tractor it would smooth out more. Right now dist is turned as far as toward the back(clockwise) as it can go plus it is hitting on the carb housing. Will it even run if its one gear off?

Beau,

I'm not trying to be a smart aleck, I'm just asking. Do you know how to time the distributor to the cam shaft manually? I'm talking about getting the #1 cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke and then checking (or inserting) the distributor shaft to insure that the rotor is pointing to the #1 spark plug wireon the distributor cap?

This should tell you where you are with the distributor, then you can decide if you want to retime it to the cam shaft or if it's possible simply to move the plug wires one post on the distributor cap. Once you have insured that the distributor is in time with the cam, then you should be able to touch up the timing with the timing light.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

I don't know about a 3000, but that is exactly what I found with my neighbor's 8N. It ran on all 4 but sounded "labored". The distributor was turned all the way to one side. When I moved the dist. the only way it could go, the engine ran worse. It ran much better after moving the dist shaft one tooth.

maybe you could relocate the wires one post back, or foreward, and have plenty of rotational adjustment.

Tell us more on how you got in this position. Have you pulled the distributor? Did you just acquire the tractor as it is? Just curious.
I'm pretty sure it will run with the distributor in the wrong place, but will run poorly at best and of course backfire as you described. But if that's the case, how did it get one tooth out of position?

This tractor was given to me. It had not run for five or six years. Years ago when it ran last my father in law had turned the battery around, don't know why and he could not remember. With battery installed backwards (+) grn. it ran for four or five years but poorly. He had also by passed the engine driven fuel pump. It is likely he had pulled the dist as when I got it there was no points, condensior, rotor, etc. coil was not wired up and the dist nut was loose.
I replaced all of that tried to install bat correctly but got no spark untill I turned the bat around (+) grn???? and with a little starter fluid it cranked right up. I replaced the carb with a rebuilded one and adj the idle setting then moved the dist by hand clockwise( it is possible to stick hand in fan) till backfiring stopped and it smoothed out and sounds pretty good but no mark shows up on flywheel with timing lite (by the way I still have to hook up the timing lite to (+) post and (-) post on bat. for it to work and the coil is switch wire to (+)side of coil then (-) side of coil to dist.and I have a great spark. Thanks to all for all the suggestions.
