Here is a question I have always wanted to ask, but I didn't want to look like a dummy. Why are the batteries in Ford 2000s and up so big? Can I use a regular size battery in place of the big one that is in my 3000 now? The reason I want to replace it, is that it is getting old and going dead on me, also the smaller battery is cheaper.

remember the tractor is design to plow and then sit till the next season... and in most cases right out in the field where it was shut down last harvest... so the battery needs to have the capacity to sit for almost a year and still start..

then there"s the cold starting preheats for the diesels and the extra cranking time needed to bring the engine up to starting temperature for the diesels....

but if you have a gas... and keep it inside... and start it often.... the big battery is not needed... even on the diesels... if you run them often.... just like a truck that gets run often... then you can really get away with something less.... but then if you let it sit for a long time.. start it in very cold temps....

the tried and true 4dlt will do a great job.. but like all batteries ... it will usually only last 3 to 5 years as the cells will sufate over and each year it loses a little capacity...

Just a word to the wize, be carefull if ya stick yer truck battery in. Some are too tall and will short across the metal hood (experience talking). I use a single battery for a VW Jetta or Rabbit diesel on my diesel 3000. It is short enough it doesn't hit the hood. It won't crank it for a long time at below freezing temperatures, but it is better for the engine to plug it in and let it warm up a bit before cranking anyway.

If you have a 3000 gas you can use a smaller battery. I have for years here in mid Michigan. Cranks the tractor over fine in zero weather. I figure they just used the same battery in all the tractors.

my ford 4000 diesel uses the 4DLT (big battery) like yours does. ford designed that on purpose so the bigger battery would have more cold cranking amps and more reserve and yes, more cost. i thought the same thing about a smaller battery, but stayed with the bigger one anyway. your call.

I get the biggest that will fit in my pickup. Then switch what ever one needs the newest bestus battery depending on season. Tractor only used in winter, truck in summer. Been doing it for 25 years.

Well , I had the same problem a few years back. My battery shot craps . " good lesson ". I went to WALMART - bought one of those $54 3 year warrantied batteries (950 CCA) , Worked like a champ. Last year battery tested low =\ took back and they gave me a new one - no charge.
If ya got a 3000 diesel , theres plenty of room in the battery rack , get two 950 CCA's and hookup in parallel.
Thats $108 vrs $168 fer std ford 12 v replacement.
Yes ! your charging system will work fine.

Gas or diesel?? If diesel then you need the big battery if gas you should be able to use a smaller battery if it has enough CCA say 700CCA of bigger
