First like to thank all that responed to first
message "Need Help on My 8N".I have gotten the
problem down to the starter. The starter bendix or
shaft is hung behind the flywheel, anybody ever heard of that?I took the two bolts holding the starter to the tractor, tried to get the starter
out with no sucess,so put the starter back in hooked the wire back to the starter, heard the
starter click like everything went back in place.
The tractor tried to start, then the problem started again. This time trying to get the starter
out,can not get the front plate of starter to come loose from tractor housing and the starter is coming apart without front plate to hold it
together. Can someone help as to how I can get the
starter out,and how to put it back together?Does
this mean the starter is bad?Thought I would try
the problem, before I give up and hang a "For Sale"sign on it.Many thanks for your help.

Once you get the starter out, grind out a little of the hole where the starter goes. Grinding should be about 2 0'clock looking at the starter hole. This is what most N owners do and it helps considerably.

If rocking it, or turning the flywheel doesn't help ( usually does 95% of the time ).. then take a chissle or big flat screwdriver and set it at the union of the starter to the bellhousing. One good whack with a hammer should make the bending retract..

If what kcred suggested doesn't free it up, you can try putting the transmission in 3rd or 4th gear and then pushing on the rear wheel to rock it back and forth. If you can get a couple extra hands to help with the rocking, that would be a good idea. Both methods are trying to accomplish the same goal. Good luck and don't use the For Sale sign yet - getting a starter out isn't the hardest thing to do. Keep at it.

Look on the other side of the tractor, directly accross from the starter, there`s a round plate with a screw , loosen the screw where you can move the plate out of the way, insert a large screw driver or small pry bar, move the fly-wheel and the starter should come loose. Hope this helps
