1956 (850 Series)...If I dont take off the negative battery connector and I let it sit for a few days, my battery goes dead. No lights on this tractor...any idea of where the leakage could be? Thanks...Paul//Florida

Babas point is the same thing I said. Trace the circuits. If that is not your thing, you could use the other way I describe. But could be a much slower go.

Rick

instead of trying something then waiting to see if the battery goes dead you need a volt meter with a amp function or a amp meter with a 0-10 amp scale.connect the amp meter in series between the pos. cable and the pos. post you should see some movement of the needle when connected then disconnect a suspect and check the meter.if the gen is a lucas and reg has a cut out coil volt coil and amperage coil.points at the volt coil apply voltage to the field term. of gen.there may be a burr on these points sending voltage to the field windings.

Paul,
Dont know your tractors wiring perfectly, but some simple logic could help you isolate it IF the suggestion Old said doesn't help.

Your battery runs power to XX number of items on your tractor. On yours I assume, ignition sys., ign. switch, generator, dash, volt. reg.

You could trace circuits looking for shorts. Just did this on my 3930 and what a pain, close to two weeks every night after work.

Or disconnect the most probable voltage leakers, say the volt. reg and the generator. After two days if your bat still has charge you know it is in the volt. reg and generator. If not the leak is in the other components.

Might sound a little backwoods, but I did this on my Buick, finally found a short in the cigarette lighter/rear window defogger circuit. Would drain the battery after two days, but not enough draw to pop the fuse.

Good luck,
Rick

Really need more info to help you with that. Is it 6 volt or 12 volt?? Does it have a genny or an alternator. Sorry may eye site isn't good enough to see it, its to far away.

In that case I'd guess you have one of the relays in the voltage reg stuck. I don't know a lot about the genny systems and some have just a single relay and some have more then one. In the ones with more then one if one of them sticks it will run the battery down. Some times you can tap on the side of them and pop it loose but thats only a stop gap fix at best. I'd replace it. Others that know that system better will probably post other answers.
