Any advice on how to set a 8N front mount distributor timing. Apparently the tractor I have (early Model) doesn't have adjustments to set the timing - the manual says to just place the distributor on as is then adjust. (Extreme loss of power and missing) Wondered if anyone has a good method to set the timing manually with this distributor and tractor type.

Thanks

Art..... ....as Dave, Bob, old sez, the squarecan frontmount distributor is timed by a ruler to 1/4" gap (see picture, explains better) on yer kitchen table. Ittza 2-bolt 15-minute job.

Yes, there is an external timing sliding adjust screw that was important in the days of 1940's 70-octaine gasoline, but with todays modern-87 octaine gasoline in yer 6.0:1 compression flathead engine, it is of NO importance.

You complain..... ."Extreme loss of power and missing"..... .well there is a lotta causes for that and the least of which is ignition timing.

You can't really check your ignition coil with common electronic test meters. But you can test the sparkies quality with enny old sparkie by gently bending the side electrode for a BIG 3/16" gap. Clamp the metal shell to a convient grounding brackett that you can see and connect enny sparkie wire to top of calibrated sparkie tester. Now turn yer ignition switch on and crank yer engine (good engines may start with just 3-sparkies) and WATCH yer calibrated sparkie tester. Do the sparkies jump the gap with "blue-snott" authority? or are they a wimpy yellowish-orangish excuse. ...or... NO SPARKIES at all?

It wouldn't surprize me that yer weak-sister ignition switch has gunked-up internal contacts that cause weak sparkies and missing. You doubt? BY-PASS yer ignition switch with a test-lead with alligator clippies. Or byte the bullett and replace yer ignition switch. $10 (cheap)..... ...respectfully, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

First check to see if the rotor or cap is damaged. A sharp pothole hit on the front end can cause the front axel to strike the distributor and damage the cap and or the rotor. If they are both good make sure you don't have a wire that was rubber bare by the fan belt. If the wires are ok as well check that you have a good fuel flow by opening the drain on the bottom of the carb you should get a steady flow of fuel. As old said make sure you have a nice blue snappy spark. If not run a wire from the supply side of your battery to the coil and recheck, if you do now check your ignition switch and wiring.Above all else check your point gap and make sure it's correct at .015. Next is compression, If all of the above fails do a compression test. The minimum required is 90 lbs per cylinder throttle open choke open. If you have low compression put about 2 tablespoons of oil in each cylinder and recheck, a significant increase shows worn rings, still low compression with no change could be valves, but if you have 2 cylinders together that are low suspect a blown head gasket. Good luck. Post back with your results.

The timing gets set "on the bench", while the distributor is removed. The link below details the procedure.

Following the procedure, and setting your timing is a good thing to do, however, I doubt it will help any with the problem you are having.

About all there is to that adjustment is setting the point at the right gap, which is .015. Your problem can be many things, from incorrect gap, weak coil, weak switch and or carb problems. You need to have a nice blue spark first. Then if you still have a problem check the carb to make sure its getting enough gas.
