My 640 still has no spark. Changed coil, points condensor, and ingnition switch. Charged 6 volt battery up. Points open and close properly. Checked bolt that goes into distributer to make sure it isn't grounding out. Cleaned clamp that holds distributer down to make sure it was grounded. Even ran a ground wire from distributor to block. Ran wire from battery to coil to bypass ignition switch. Still no spark. All wiring is new. The only things not replace are cap and rotor plugs and spark plug wires. Is the generator wiring part of the ignition circuit? What is the purpose of the little relay above the voltage regulator? Could that be causing problems. Any other ideas?

Simple way to check ignition.Watch the ammeter while cranking.Meter will tell you if points are opening and closing.Next ,take center wire out of dist cap, position it 1/4 inch from block.Crank the engine with ingnition on and see if you get a spark. It will help if you have a basic understanding of how an ignition works. You will know how to fix it without changing a lot of parts.Get a copy of a 50s Motors auto Repair Manual.Ive had one for 55 years, made monthly payments on it when I was working for $40.00 a week.Bought one at a yard sale for 50 cents this summer.Plenty of old copies around.

Andy my father in law gave me a 3400 gas 3 cyl with the dist in parts. Like you I was having trouble getting a spark and I replaced everthing. My problem was that somewhere along the line He had installed the battery with a (+) grn. When I turned the battery around backwards like he had it, I got a spark you could hear for 1/2 mile and a sharp blue spark at the dist you could see in the daylight. The tractor then started after five or six years of sitting.

Andy, Take an ohm meter and check tha there is no short on both contact areas of the points to ground with the points open. If you show a closed circuit on both sides of the points when they are open then there is a short. You sound like you are getting to the point of loosing it, but don't worry success is not far off. That little insulator on the distributor screw can be very elusive and short with the slightest movement.

Lets start as the easy and work to the hard. Pull the cap and rotor off. Turn on the key, then with your finger open the points. Do you see a spark?? If yes then, pull the coil wire from the center of the cap and hold it close to the block and open and close the points by hand. Do you get a spark from the coil wire?? If yes then I'll bet you have a bad cap and or rotor.

No spark at the points means that either they are dirty/bad or they are shorted out some place in the dist. Double check them/clean them and check to make sure nothing in the dist is shorting. Even the wire going in to the dist could be bad and shorting where it goes in to the dist.
