I have an opportunity to buy a nice Ford 961 Diesel at a reasonable price. I believe that most of the 172 cu in diesels were based on the gas engine of the same displacement but some of the parts (like the crankshaft, fuel system parts, etc) were unique to the diesel and might be hard, if not impossible, to find. The tractor is in beautiful shape right now and starts and runs excellent. I'm just thinking about problems down the road. Any thoughts or experience/advice would be appreciated. Thanks and Merry Christmas!

I would not be afraid of it. Parts are really not much more difficult to find, nor are they much (if any) more expensive. Well, pistons are more expensive, but a set usually lasts about 40 years with good maintenance practices.

If it is past serial number 104,xxx it will have a factory installed engine balancer. The balancer makes the engine run much smoother. I have a 971-D and have not had problems getting parts. Check to see that it does not leak diesel into the motor oil. They do that sometimes but it can be fixed.

Thanks: Serial number is well above 104000. It looks like a mid-1960 model.

Like the other poster said, you should be able to find nearly anything that you might need for a 172 diesel, either new or used. Some parts may be rather expensive, however.

The gasoline engine is quite a bit less expensive to overhaul as neaarly all parts are readily available at reasonable prices and you do not have the major expense of the injector pump.

Diesel Injection Pump in reply to Dean, 12-24-2005 13:50:01
These are expensive only if you have to send them out or buy a rebuilt. With a bit of common sense, one or two special tools, a clean work space, a little know how and patience, one can overhaul these to near new condition for less than fifty bucks and a bit of time.

That's good information, Larry. I have never owned a Ford diesel nor worked on one but I am somewhat aware of the going rate for rebuilt pumps.

My father was a field engineer for GM Truck and Bus in the 40s, 50s and 60s and I would sometimes travel with him to various fleet shops when I was a kid. I remember looking through the glass of the clean room as the techs would rebuild the Detroit injectors in a clean room (the only air conditioned area in the entire shop). I was facinated by their seemingly endless patience as they would hand lap various parts prior to reassembly with tweezers.

Hi Bill,

You should not encounter any difficulty finding engine parts, or any other parts, for your 961 Ford diesel.

Merry Christmas to all.
