I am looking at buying a Ford 4400 with front end loader. The web site has been a wealth of informaion for me in making the decision to buy or not so I will thank everyone up front.

One thing I haven't figured out is according to the serial number this tractor has an independent pto but what is an independent pto? I am assuming it means the pto isn't controlled by the clutch at all, just a lever operates it but is that correct?

The tractor has one hyd. cylinder that has a slow leak and according to the owner the power steering pump is leaking into the engine. The cylinder isn't a problem but does anyone have any experience taking off the power steering pump? Is it a big job? Will the front end loader have to be removed to pull the pump?

Thanks in advance and for a great web site.
Bob

If that is the PS pump bolted to the left side of the engine with an attached cannister rebuild it like Murn said. The kit is fairly cheap and as long as you pay close, and I mean close, attention to how it comes apart you can do it. I rebuilt mine and if I can do it just about anyone can. Plan on a new filter while you're at it.

Bob,the pto is activated when you move the lever and it applys a hyd clutch pack, making it ind from the trans. the cyl like you say is no problem, you should have a 735 loader. To remove the p/s pump, remove two hyd tubes and three bolts and pull it out. Some remove the gear, remove snap ring and pry the seal out and replace. However, the best way is to remove the canister with filter, and disassemble pump and install seal and all o'rings. Some early 4400's had the canister under the hood. Pay close attention to disassemble and not bad at all.
