did an 801. 6v to 12 with a alternator. no more dead batteries. hit the switch and it starts. the old 6v system would crank and crank and hopefully start.

I won't argue the benefits of converting, but if you do, look at Genessee Products for a 12v. conversion kit.

I've converted 4 different tractors, and Genessee's kit is simple, well made and their product support is great.

They're listed on the left side of the screen. Ask for Andy.

And no, I don't work for them - they just impressed me.

I second the Genessee recommendation - Couldn't have done it without Andy there.

Try their Electronic Ignition as well.

Good Luck!

BTW, my starting problems ENDED when I converted.

If you have 6V its a gas and diesels have 12V. If your battery has fill caps on it, 3 caps would be 6Vs and 6 caps would be 12Vs.

Hello Will,
That is a much-discussed question here. You can find a lot of good info by checking the archives on the forums here, I think maybe the N-board may have more stuff. I have 6 and 12-volt tractors, and am convinced that leaving a 6-volt system in place, and just putting it in good working order may be better than converting, especially if you might want to restore that particular tractor in the future. Kinda depends on what you use the tractor for and what you want out of it. Good luck.

It will start easier, especially in cold weather.

Erich,
You need to define "start easier" for me. My 860 is 6 volt and starts every time, and here in Wisconsin, that's down to as much as -40F, although to be truthful, I won't start if it is below about -15F.

Before I switched to 12 volts, my 861 would barely turn over below 15 deg. F. With the 12 Volt system, it starts at any temperature that I've tried it at so far (Upstate New York). It starts after fewer revs and it turns faster.
