My 640 runs with 80 + lbs. oil pressure. Checked it with two different guages. The manual says 40 - 45lbs. is normal. Is the pressure relief on the pump stuck. Is this something I should be concerned about?

I have an 881 diesel that had 80 psi oil pressure all the time.Needed rings & bearings, while apart looked at oil pump. Relief valve acted like it could be sticky,no parts available so replaced oil pump.Put it all back together, fired it up. Now it has over 100 psi and blows oil out around the filter base. I suppose bearings are all tighter now so no leakage internally either. Yes I checked with another guage to be sure readings were accurate. Are weaker springs available?

My 640 was rebuilt years ago(not by me). It doesn't smoke or use 1 drop of oil. I carry 57-58 lbs. of oil pressure when it's under load. Idling hot it runs at about 30lbs or so. I would think that your engine running 60-65 lbs. when hot is excellent, but I'm no expert.

After it warms up and is at idle the pressure drops to 60 - 65.

I have a 960 that has a rebuilt engine and runs about 65 psi consitently. I think that is good. Perhaps the manual is refering to minimum pressure levels?

Andy, there is an optional oil pump that is offered for the 134, 172 engines that puts out 80 to 100 psi, someone may have replaced your pump with a high pressure pump. When the engine gets hot and you are at idle where is the pressure reading?

You may want to change out the relief valve in the pump. All new pumps are industrial pumps.

Hey Pernell,

What would the down side be of running 80 lbs vs the 40-45 lbs pressure?

John my rebuilt 801 was holding pressure right at 58 psi hot or cold. I was led to believe that the neoprene rear seal was the way to go. After changing it and wedge seals it still leaked. Oh, did I mention twice? Thanks to Pernells advise, I just got through tearing it all the way down and put in rope seals. I have put at least 6 hours run time on it and have no leak. I know there are two relief holes in rear bearing cap and it makes me wonder if they can handle the higher volumn of oil. Just my 2cents, Richard
