Hour meter running backwards

I am new here and to tractors in general. I recently purchased a Ford 4600 SU. It seems to be in great shape. However, the hour meter is running backwards. Is this an easy fix? Thanks in advance for your help.

The 4600 had a manual tach, and a manual proof meter from the factory. There was nothing electrical about it other than the backlight. Do the numbers on the tach start on the left, and advance to the right, counterclockwise? You say that the tach needle runs clockwise, starting on the right? From that description, I would guess that the tach is driven from the generator. Look on the left hand side of the engine, and at the generator. You will probably see a drive cable emanating from the rear of the generator. If you do, then you've found the source of the problem.... That being that you have an instrument cluster for a 4600, and a drive system from a 4000, or more directly, a 4000 with a 4600's instrument cluster. The 4600's tach should be driven from an angle drive below the oil filter. I've got a gut feeling that your tractor is not a 4600, but a 4000... I can't see somebody removing the tach angle drive and alternator to install a generator with tach drive. Reminds me of shooting one's self in the foot.... Let us know what you've got.....

Cool! I wish I could make mine do that.

Seriously, if it is an electric hour meter it is probably hooked-up backwards. If it is part of the tach, it may have the wrong tach installed.

If the hour meter is part of the tach tell us if the tach works?

I am not sure how the meter works. My guess is that it runs off of the tach. The tach seems to work in reverse as well, as it moves clockwise and starts in about the 2 o"clock position. I have not traced the wires from the hour meter, but there are 2 wires that come from that general area an enter into the transmission near the shift levers.

At first I thought it was pretty cool that the meter run in reverse, now it sort of bothers me.

Thanks for your help.

That 'tach backwards also' would have been good info to give us when you stated the hour meter also ran backwards.

I agree.. I think you have a mismatched dash to your tractor. I have a 5000, and it uses the genny drive tach.. neddle is 0rpm on the right and swings clockwise to left to read.

( Though i have seen a 5000 with both the under oil filter drive and the genny drive.. (neat).

It sounds like your hour meter is part of the tach assembly. If so, it is probaly mechanical and not electrical. The wires are probably for some other function so I do not recommend that you reverse them.

Sometimes similar looking tach assemblies are designed for operation in different tractors or with different engines, which might have opposite rotation. If both your hourmeter and tach seem to indicate reverse of what is expected, it would seem that it is not the right assembly for your tractor.

Thanks Dean. How do I figure out what assembly I need to fix this? Are these assemblies still made?

I think that Rod is on the right track. Verify what tractor and engine you have. You can then post back for more advice. I suspect that the tach assemblies are still available but they will not be inexpensive unless available from aftermarket suppliers.
