Manual Steering- Problems Questions- 861D

I was using my 1958 861D today and I noticed that it was hard to turn left. I heard a couple of pops and then it wouldn't turn left- the steering wheel and shaft were screwing out of the housing. I knew from previous posts here that the upper thrust bearing was bad so I pulled the steering box and disassembled it.

First question- I have the genuine Ford Service Manual for the 1954-1964 XX0 and XX1 series tractors and I can find absolutely nothing about Manual Steering in it- only Power Steering. Can someone direct me to the pages in the Ford manual that cover manual steering?

I also have I&T Manual FO-20. It covers the manual steering box on pages 7 & 8.

Second question. The lower thrust bearing needs to be replaced also. How do I remove the "Eyelet", #19 in the exploded view Fig. FO2 on page 7? It appears to be peened in place. It must come off in order to remove #20, Bearing Retainer and #22, Thrust Bearing. In the "Overhaul" section on page 8 the manual says "renew the wormshaft bearings". No help there.

All help is appreciated.

The ford service manual has very little on the standard steering. You need the parts book for the break down.
Now per the picture tell us what problem you are having as I do not have a IT manual.

In this diagram the I&T Eyelet #19 is Ford # 356937-S, the Bearing Retainer #20 is Ford # 33581 and the Thrust Bearing is Ford #3571.

# 356937-S appears to be driven or peened in place.

Not real sure if it is peened in place. When I took my box apart it was so wore out it just fell out.
When I put the new one in it just set down on the bottom with the shaft on it.
Sorry!!!!! !!

Sorry, can't help on the manual question.

On the "eyelet", I think you are discribing a nut that has an elongated collar. If so...The collar is peened into a slot on the shaft to keep it from backing out. The Ford manual says to carefully cut the nut and split it off. Then get a new nut from Ford. Rather than do that, if the nut is in general good shape, I have had good luck slowly prying the peened area out using a small screw driver and a small chisel cutter. When putting it back on, be sure the old and new peen area are different!

Hope that helps some!
