Thanks to Rod, I now know that I have the wrong instrument cluster on my 4600 SU. I have located the correct cluster, but now I am wondering.... What cluster do I have? It has 2 idiot lights, a fuel guage and a voltage meter. I also looked at the cluster for a ford 4000 and it looked the same as the 4600. So what cluster do I have? Any ideas? Just curious.

the early x000 series had the old gauge setup.. the later x000 series went to the new style when the alternator was added... all of the x600 series had alternators.. so a 4600 or a late 4000 would have the new guage pod... the eary 4000 with the gen had the older style gauge...

If the instrument panel you have has only two red lens, then it is an older original for the x000 series tractors, the rotation will be backward to anything else.

Hmmm. The left hand gauge should be a fuel gauge, while the right should be a temperature gauge. It will have black and green and red bars. If you look closely at the cluster for a name or other id marks, you will probably see "AC" (the manufacturer) on the cluster, probably the back side. I have an old one around, but don't know where anymore. The newer style clusters that the 4600 had were made by Sterart Werner. The AC cluster will have an aluminum frame if I recall correctly, while the Stewart Werner will be black plactic. The only other distinctive characteristic that comes to mind is the gauges themselves. The AC had the thermostatic gauges that always rest to the left, as they were activated by heat deflection. The stewart werner gauges were the balancing coil type, and would often gravitate towards the center when not energised, but could land just about anywhere. I think the Stewart Werner will have it's name written on the face (behind the glass) towards the bottom of the cluster, but I won't swear to that..... HTH. BTW, if you could post up a picture or two, somebody would probably id it for you....
