I have a 1966, model 2000, gas, 4 speed that is having problems starting. I believe the problem is either with the starter relay or the starting motor itself. When the problem first began the ignition system would be operating properly, with the starting motor cranking normally, when it would suddenly lose power (it seemed) and rapidly wind down. I would release the key and turn it again and the motor would resume cranking and the engine would eventually start. The tractor sits idle for long periods of time and this had become routine during cold start-ups. Recently the problem got worse. Everything was the same during the initial cold start-up, but over the course of several days, more often than not, the starting motor would lose power almost instantly after initial contact. With repeated attempts it would crank enough to start the engine, but I don't think I will be able to cold start it again. The apparent sudden loss of power to the motor makes me suspect the relay, but there are probably starter motor prblems that would produce the same symptoms. I am looking for any advice that is available. Thanks.

If you take the starter to a parts house to have it checked, you might as well take the battery too. Most if not all parts houses can check them too by doing a load test. If they both show to be good, I would suspect bad cables or connections. If they both show good and you reinstall them both and now it turns over as it should then it was a bad connection, more than likely a post to cable connection.
A simple bad ground connection can cause more grief than you can imagine, and is such an easy fix. If a bad ground is suspected, a simple way to check is take your jumper cables and hook to the negative side of the battery (assuming it's a negative ground system) and hook the other end of the same single lead to the frame of the tractor making sure you get good contact. Paint does not make a good contact.
Some times we over diagnose and think the worse when it turns out to be something very simple and free to fix.
Good luck!

Thank you. I'll check all of the connections.

Bennett,

I think old is right on about the starter needing to be tested. But, one more thing that I'd do before I removed the starter, is, I'd put jumper cables onto the battery before I tried to start it the first time. If the same problem occurs, I'd definitely pull the starter. If the starter runs well and doesn't slow down, I think I'd suspect the battery. I've seen plenty of times when the starter would slow down and then pick right back up when I turned the key off and back on. In those cases, it always turned out to be a weak battery.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

Not likly to be as you call it the relay, called a soliniod by the way. They are make or no brake things and don't do what your problem is. Its more likely to be your starter and or battery cables. Most good parts store will check a starter for free by the way.
