I've got oil coming out of the overflow tube from the engine when it's running. Any idea's what the problem may be?

The crankcase could be building pressure. Again, that could be from a bad head gasket, bad rings, or broken pistons. I suppose it's also possible that some of the oil drain holes from the upper part of the engine have somehow become blocked, and thus allow the oil to flow out the crankcase vent tube, but that's an awful long shot. Generally, an engine pushing oil is doing so because of excess of combustion gases in the base of the engine, and their pressure surging upwards towards the vent tube restricts oil from returning to the base, and is thus carried out the vent tube.
Not the news you wanted to hear, I'm sure....

It has become harder to start and noisy at first (similiar to worn main bearings) but once running compression seems to be fine, no antifreeze leaks, no smoke blow by. Just small amounts of oil coming from the tube.

You didn't say what the oil level is or was. So I would guess if the oil isn't dilluted with fuel it could be a hole in a piston, blown head gasket, or stuck rings. Something is causing the crankcase to build pressure. More info is needed. Chris

Cvan- the oil level was normal but obviously it is lower now. Not a case of overfilling the oil. What do you think?

Thanks

I think we are back to the blow-by building crankcase pressure. If in fact this is the case I'm affraid things aren't good in river city. Is this something that has just started in a short period of time? I would think it has been coming on slowly. My guess is worn rings and cylinders. Usually as the pistons warm and expand your engine noise will decrease. You will also notice more oil being discharged from the engine as the oil heats and thins down. I'd check compression and start thinking about an overhaul. First a good mechanic in your area should be consulted before you spend any money.
Good luck!
Chris
