On a 1956 Ford 740, correct me if I'm wrong, but dosen't it have four places to put oil? 1. Engine. 2. Transmission 3. Hydralic Lift 4. Rear Differential. What I don't know is what type of oil goes in all other than the engine? Thanks in Advance, Sonny

so I can use 134d spec, hydro oil for the tranny/
hydraulic system/& differential? If my trannsmission has 90 weight in it right now, which it's a little low, can I add this multi purpose hydro oil to the tranny to top er off?
Basically I'm asking if it hurts for me to mix the two.

Actually, there are 3 more oil reservoirs in addition to the air cleaner oil cup (4, if it has power steering).

1. Final drives - 1 1/2 qt 90W per side.

2. Steering gear - 90W

3. Front pedestal - 2 qts 90W.

Having said that, CNH now recommends 134D for everyting except the engine.

The front pedestal is the one most often overlooked.

You forgot 5. Air cleaner cup. OK, that's being picky. Whatever you have in the engine, also goes in the air cleaner cup.

As for the big parts (trans, rear, hydraulics): there's a fair amount of debate on that. New Holland now specs the thin 134 oil for all three, but I'm like old, I like gear oil in the trans and diff so I use 80W-90. I do use the 134 in the hydraulic system. I've never heard of the 303 stuff old is talking about. I'd like to hear more about it.

303 is the closest thing to a generic in reply to Jim.UT, 01-11-2006 10:40:21
oil that you will find. If a store only keeps one type of hydraulic oil in stock it will be 303. It is also commonly called TDH- Trans, Drive, Hydraulic. 303 DOES NOT meet Ford spec 134D. It does meet Ford spec 134A,B&C.

I assume the 134D spec is for newer machines and that 134A, B & C will be fine for my 50 year old 850, right?

The 303 stuff is a universal hyd oil that as per the bucket meets Ford, JD, Oliver/White, Farmall etc specs for hyds. I use it in all my tractor hyds systms. But when you have as many tractors as I have its hard to try to keep 2 or more oils around for the differant brands of tractors. I have Fords, Farmalls, JD, Oliver, MH, Allis and a couple other bigger machines.

I think your right about the 4 places. I use 80W-140 in my 801/841 tranny and rear end and use oreillys 303 hyd oil in the hyds in it. I don't really know if thats correct but I have used that for 20 plus years and never had any problems
