I just traded for a non running 4 cyl diesel 4000 SOS. The rear wheels are locked up. I mean they move a little bit, like somethin' in the trans. locked up. My question is could the trans. be stuck in park somehow? Or is there other possiblites. I think the engine will run, just haven't gotten to it yet. The tractor looks like a old 801 and has steering cyl. on both sides. It has 12.2X24 rear tires I guess it must about '61 yr model. I need a cheap service manual for it, what would show repairing the SOS any suggestions as to which manual to get?

While it is not real important lets look at what tractor you have.

"The tractor looks like a old 801"

Ever hear the saying....
If it looks like a duck; smells like a duck; and sounds like a duck; it is most likely a duck; even know someone else calls it a chicken.

If the tractor has a front grill like a 801 it can be a 801 or a industrial 4000. The easy way to tell them apart is the front axle. If it adjust it is a 801 and if it is solid it is a 4000 industrial.

We can also get into dating the tractor per casting #'s if your model # is wore off because of battery acid eating at it over the years.

I would get the FORD manual. Reprints are available on e-bay. It has some things about the SOS but I think you can also get a SOS supplement manual. The IT manual has many short commings in my mind.

Okay, I've had a chance to play with my new toy and here's what I've found.

The ser. no's have two sets one set more to the the inside which are clear and read 40316. The set to outside are not as clear 171338 I'm not real sure as to first 17 as the batt acid did get to it.

Now for the good news. The suggestion about the park release screw appears to have worked. I just haven't moved it very far yet, but does seem to move freely now.

The fellow I got the tractor from said he'd put anther fuel pump as the original had been stolen from the tractor in previous years. Now I try and start the tractor and did get it run just briefly, just long enough to notice no oil pressure building. I check guage with some air pressure and it's okay. Took off oil filter and cranked engine, no oil. My question is, is this a gas engine that ford converted to a diesel? If so could there have been a shaft that drives the oil pump from the fuel pump drive. The fuel pump looks to be mounted where distributor could have been. If this is the case the former owner may not have put the oil pump drive shaft on when he installed the replacement fuel pump. Sorry for the long post, but I'm runnin' blind till I get books. bjr.

Well I am running a little blind as I am at my son's house in Md so my books are not here.

The fuel pump drives the oil pump.
And yes this is a gas engine converted to diesel.
Those #'s are from a 4000 industrial but I can not tell you what year at this time.

Should have a solid front axle and the orginal color is blue and buff (yellow).

I checked my manual and both the gas and diesel engines drive the oil pump via the distributor or diesel injection pump. There is a hexagonal intermediary shaft from the oil pump to the injector pump gear.

I don't know if the shaft could drop into the oil pan, but it is easy enough to drop the oil pan and verify it is not in there. The other alternative is the thief got the shaft, so to speak.

No Oil Pressure in reply to ErnieDD, 01-15-2006 09:23:11
I checked oil dipstick and there was some on the stick and thought that should be plenty to start her up. But I thought I"d drain it and see how much that was, well it turned out only to be about a pint of oil. I refilled with 5 qts. changed filter started up again and 60 psi pressure. Pretty smoky but she runs. I turn the Park bypass screw back to original position and tried the transmission with engine running and nothing happened. I think there"s probably a spool valve somewhere not spooling and not sure where to look for it. I"m making progress, slowly, one function at a time. If someone can give me a hint as to what valve or part to look at to make her move I would appreciate it. Thanks so far for the help you have gave me. bjr

bjr, Glad you are making progress with your tractor. Is there plenty of oil in the SOS??? I think there is a pipe plug on the right side of the transmission about maybe half way up the side. Take this plug out and see if there is oil in there. I think it should be within 1 inch of this hole. If not add 134 trans hy oil. Keep us posted. I also have a tractor about like yours. B. Jones

Re engaging the traction disconnect can be tricky. I suggest that you remove the round inspection cover and visually inspect to see that the coupling is indeed connected. Also, does the PTO work? Finally, since there was no oil in the engine, you should check the oil level in the S-O-S as well. There is a spuare-headed level plug on the right side in front of the footboard.

why do you think you have a trans proplem? also if the motor is not running the trans remains in park, if you have to move the tractor with out the engine running there is a round plate on the trans by your left foot on the plate you will see a shaft with two flat sides held by a metal bracket remove the bracket and turn the shaft to unlock the trans without motor running. does this help at all?

SOS is supposed to default to park when the engine is not running.
